                        POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH POSITION
                                                               May 2002
Dear colleague
there is an opening in my group for a postdoctoral research
position to work on the project "Microscopic theory of quantum solids".
Some details are given below as well as a brief description of the research
project.
                                                Sincerely yours
                                                Luciano Reatto

RESEARCH GROUP AND RESEARCH PROJECT.
The staff members of the research group of prof. Luciano Reatto are
prof. Alberto Parola, dr Davide Galli and dr Davide Pini. Presently we have 2
post docs, 4 PhD students and a number of undergraduate thesis students.
One of the area of research is the microscopic theory of quantum liquids
and solids with special emphasis on 4He.
In the last few years we have been specially interested in disorder
phenomena in quantum solid like solid 4He at the lowest densities.
We have treated for the first time on the basis of microscopic
theory phenomena like the liquid-solid interface, a vacancy in crystalline
4He and the local solid-like order ("snowball") which is present around a
positive ion in superfluid 4He. Recently we found evidence that a vacancy
in the solid close to melting induces Bose Einstein condensation of the 4He
atoms. We plan to give a further impulse to our research projects on quantum
solids with this new position.
One technique we have been using is variational Monte Carlo with
shadow wave functions.
We expect that the candidate will work with this
technique as well as with other simulation methods and also that he will
develop simplified analytical models.
