    COLLECTIVE MOTION OF COLD ATOMS IN MAGNETIC AND OPTICAL MICRO POTENTIALS

                                   Abstract:
Atoms can effectively be trapped in optical or magnetic fields and cooled below
  the critical temperature for Bose-Einstein condensation. While typically the
   trapping potentials are purely harmonic and static we concentrate on novel
  effects which occurs in more sophisticated geometries. With micro fabricated
current conductors magnetic potentials can be tailored which guide atomic matter
    waves near the surface of an "atom chip". On chip elements such as beam
 splitters, interferometers and even conveyor belts are conceivable and can be
combined to an "on chip laboratory" for integrated atom optics. In a second type
 of experiments the atoms are trapped in the field of an optical resonator. The
 collective motion of the atoms acts back on the optical field and fascinating
new effects can be studied including a long time predicted novel type of laser,
