                           THE PHYSICS OF COLD ATOMS

                                   Abstract:
  Ultracold atoms in an optical lattice potential exhibit fascinating quantum
phenomena. For instance, a particle-like atomic crystal can be melted to form a
    wave-like Bose-Einstein condensate. Controlled atomic collisions lead to
  interesting multi-particle entanglement. Microfabricated "atomic chips" can
  integrate atomic wave guides, traps, beam splitters, and other atom optical
elements to form a complex quantum laboratory on a chip. Potential applications
   range from novel atomic clocks or atom interferometric sensors to quantum
                            information processing.
