     From Technology to Discovery: The Impact of New Superconducting Magnet
                       Technology On High Energy Physics

                                   Abstract:
The reach of hadron colliders for discovery in high energy physics is limited by
  the technology of the superconducting magnets that bend and focus the beams.
 Over the past decades this technology has advanced from the Tevatron (4 Tesla)
      to LHC (8 Tesla), using magnets with the superconductor NbTi. Recent
 developments of Nb3Sn superconductor and new approaches to magnet design have
led to a new generation of superconducting magnets, today reaching 16 Tesla. The
   latest innovation is a hybrid dipole, utilizing windings of both Nb3Sn and
Bi-2212, that should reach 24 Tesla. The superconductors, the magnet technology,
     and the implications of these developments for high energy physics are
                                   discussed.
