     Phase-Separation Triggers Gelation in Short-ranged Attractive Colloids

                                   Abstract:
   We present quantitative evidence that gelation is universally triggered by
       liquid-gas phase separation in colloidal systems with short-range
 polymer-induced depletion attraction. By comparing cluster-size distributions
  from confocal microscopy and molecular-dynamics simulations, we estimate the
    second virial coefficient, showing the coincidence of the experimentally
   observed gel-transition with the liquid-gas phase-separation. Our method,
 leveraging the Noro-Frenkel law of corresponding states, is independent of the
  attractive potential`s shape, thereby providing a way to both quantitatively
 test theoretical depletion models, and to investigate thermodynamic quantities
          in systems where the potential is not readily characterized.
