GAMMA-RAY TRACKING: OPPORTUNITIES  FOR BASIC AND APPLIED RESEARCH"

Abstract

Due to advances in manufacturing large and highly segmented
semi-conductor detectors along with the availability of fast and high
precision digital electronics it is now possible to build a new
generation of gamma-ray detection systems with unprecedented sensitivity
for applications ranging from basic research to homeland security. These
new instruments allow us to obtain the number of individual gamma-ray
interactions in the detector, their positions as well as their energies
with high accuracy. Gamma-ray tracking algorithms not only provide the
scattering sequence of these interactions and improve the spectroscopic
response of the instrument but enable the determination of the incident
direction of gamma rays with high sensitivity without using a collimator
with potentially profound implications for homeland security and
biomedical applications. I will introduce the concept of gamma-ray
tracking in position-sensitive semi-conductors and discuss applications
in nuclear and fundamental physics and applied research in biomedical
imaging and homeland security.
