The National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) is an organization dedicated to the study of the fundamental constituents of matter and carries out research, both theoretical and experimental, in the fields of nuclear, subnuclear and astroparticle physics.
Fundamental research in these areas requires cutting-edge technologies and instrumentation, which the INFN develops in its own laboratories and in collaboration with industry.
The INFN also promotes the transfer of knowelege, methodologies and techniques developed as part of its activities to research to different fields such as medicine, cultural heritage, the environment, applied nuclear (energy).
Development of instrumentation dedicated to nuclear and sub-nuclear measures has always been one of the strategic objectives of the Institution.
Connected with the startegic objectives is then related the whole development of skills on telematic communication networks, the preparation of physical models, continuous development of methods for analyzing and applying at the highest levels the numerical calculation methods.
The strategic objectives mentioned have allowed INFN to be a world-leading institution in basic and applied research.
The structures arranged on the territory as the Milan Unit have capacity of independent development even if linked within the institution's national structure.
In particular the section laboratories are dedicated to the development of : particle detectors, analog and digital electronic instruments, data acquisition instrumentation, technologies for the management and the use of large farm of calculation with access to Petabytes of data, systems and techniques data processing, analysis software, theoretical models of complex systems, equipment for medical and industrial applications, high vacuum systems, cryogenic equipment.
In addition the Milan section has advanced measurement laboratories for nuclear measurements, characterization of electronic components, environmental radiation monitoring and an efficient mechanical workshop with precision equipments.
Belonging to the section thereis also the L.A.S.A. Laboratory, equipped with cryogenics plant for the production of liquid helium, a crane with a capacity of 50 tons, a clean room class ISO4, a radiochemistry laboratory class B, enabled the manipulation of sources radioactive, sealed or not, and neutron sources.
At L.A.S.A. Laboratory particle accelerators and components for them, such as accelerating cavities at radiofrequency and superconducting magnets are developed.
The direct involvement of the INFN and the Milan Section in high profile international projects such as the development of detectors for the LHC experiment at CERN in Geneva, the realization of experiments for the study of atomic nuclei and the elusive neutrino, and for the realization of intense light, puts the section in the condition of a necessary and continuous work of internal innovation to maintain the level and international prestige acquired.
The Milan section of INFN is registered in the regional system "QuESTIO" and "Open Innovation".
The Milan Section is part of the regional Cluester "Life Science" (Scienze della Vita).
